St. Louis-based trombonist Matt Hoormann, earned his Baccalaureate and Masters Degrees in Music Performance at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. There, he had many opportunities under the instruction of James Martin and Brett Stamps. Matt played principal trombone in the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra and held various positions within the SIUE Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra, Concert Jazz Band, Brass Choir, Jazz Trombone Quartet, and Brass Quintet. It was with the SIUE Wind Symphony that Matt enjoyed his Carnegie Hall debut as well as a ten-day concert tour in Europe, featuring performances at St. Martin-in-the-Fields, the American Cathedral, and Surrey University. As an SIUE graduate student, he was able to expand his musical talents by arranging pieces for various ensembles and sharing conducting responsibilities for the University Concert Band. Matt graduated with his Doctorate of Musical Arts from University of California Los Angeles in Spring of 2007. While at UCLA, Matt studied with Bill Booth and performed as a member of the UCLA Wind Ensemble, Brass Choir, Trombone Choir, and Gluck Brass Quintet. He also served as a rehearsal conductor for the UCLA Trombone Choir and as Music Director for the UCLA Brass Choir. While living in Los Angeles, Matt gave private lessons in tenor and bass trombone as well as tuba and euphonium. Some of the notable artists and ensembles Matt has had the opportunity to perform with are: the San Diego Symphony Pops Orchestra featuring Lou Rawls, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, The Saint Louis Low Brass Collective featuring members of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra low brass section, the Vinny Golia Large Ensemble, Doc Severinsen, Louis Bellson, John Fedchock, Pat Sheridan, Sam Pilafian, Mike Vax, Paul McKee, Bill Perkins, Kim Richmond, Clay Jenkins, Dave Pietro, Scott Whitfield, Jens Lindemann, Bill Reichenbach, Bob McChesney, Alex Iles, Andy Martin, Phil Teele, James Miller, Brett Stamps, Reggie Thomas, Rick Haydon, Gary Hobbs, Stockton Helbing, and Allen Vizzutti. In addition to three recordings with the SIUE Wind Symphony, Matt can also be heard on the Jim Widner Big Band's 2007 release entitled "Out of This World" as well as Lorenzo Trujillo's Soul Circus's 2009 disc "Playing With Fire". Matt currently teaches at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri. |
